Getting All Your PR's on One Tape

First, you need 2 VCRs, at least 2 tapes, a TV, and 2 RCA A/V cables. If you don't know what an RCA A/V cable looks like, it's that thing with the yellow, white, and red plugs on each end. The N64 has an RCA A/V cable connected to it, but that won't work because it only has one end (which is probably connected to your VCR), the other end is permanently attached to the N64. If you don't think you have any RCA cables, you might want to check other electronic equipment in your house, such as a stereo, VCR, DVD player, etc--they're pretty easy to find. If you seriously don't have any at all in your house, they're very easy to find and very inexpensive at any electronics store)

Now that you have all the equipment, here's the important part: setting it up. Let's get a few things straight first.

  • The Master tape is the tape that you want all your best PR's to be on. Put that tape into either VCR, and that VCR will be your Master VCR.
  • The tape that currently has your PR on it, and all the other stuff you don't need (failures, aborts, etc) is your Normal tape. Put the Normal tape into the other VCR, which will then be your Normal VCR.

Okay. Now, take the first RCA A/V cable, take one of the yellow plugs and connect it to the back of the Normal VCR. There should be 2 yellow input areas. One of them is an out, the other is an in. Plug the RCA cable into the one that says out. Right next to the yellow plug on the RCA cable, there should be a white plug. Take that white plug and connect it to the white out port on the VCR. Now, not all VCR's have a red section. If yours doesn't, don't worry about it, all you need is yellow and white. If it does have a red input, though, might as well use it, so hook up the red plug of the RCA cable to the red out on the VCR.

At the other end of the cable you just hooked up should be 3 more plugs, another yellow, white, and red. You want to hook this end up to the Master VCR. Make all 3 (or 2 if there's no red) plugs go into the in section of the Master VCR. Again, make sure to match up the yellow plug with the yellow section, etc.

Now, take out your other RCA A/V cable, the one that's not plugged into anything yet. Take one end of the cable and hook it up to the out of your Master VCR. Hook up the other end of that cable to your TV. As of now, you're all ready to go.

To start recording: Firstly, make sure everything is on. Your Master tape (if there's nothing on it yet) should be rewound to the very beginning. Your Normal tape should be set so that the position on the tape is just a little bit before your PR starts (maybe 10 seconds before). Here is what you do now:

  1. Press Play on your Normal VCR. The images from the tape should appear on the TV, as well as the sound.
  2. Watch the TV for a few seconds until your PR run starts.
  3. Once your PR run starts, press Record on your Master VCR. Now, your Normal VCR should be playing at the same time that the Master VCR is recording.
  4. Don't touch anything during the PR run.
  5. As soon as the level is over and endscreen comes up, you can stop recording.
  6. To do this, hit Stop on the Master VCR. You will still see images on the TV, but nothing is being recorded after hitting Stop.
  7. Now hit Stop on your Normal VCR. The TV should no longer be showing images from your tape.
**Be sure to hit Stop on your Master VCR first!**

To check to see if it worked, you can rewind the Master tape and then press Play on the Master VCR. You should see your PR come up on the TV, with no other runs or levels before of after it. Hit Stop on the Master VCR once your PR has ended, but don't rewind. When you tape your next PR, you want your Master tape to be right after your first one, so you don't tape over your first one but at the same time you don't have to wait a while for your second PR to start.

Any problems?
